Der Schritt
This design uses the sound of footsteps in contrast with silence to evoke memories of the people who were shot as they were trying to cross the death zone of the Berlin Wall. The pavilion helps visitors enter a state of reflection, prior to entering the Chapel of Reconciliation. The name of the pavilion,”Schritt”, is the German word for footstep. The pavilion is designed as a counterpoint to the Chapel of Reconciliation, where people, mainly tourists, can remember the gravity of the Berlin Wall that is still prevalent in German culture today. It is located within the Berlin Wall Memorial Park. Throughout the park are plaques on the ground with names of people who died trying to cross the wall.
